The photograph above, entitled Autumn in Greenwood County, Kansas by David Leiker, reminds me of fall camping trips in the Flint Hills with my son's Boy Scout troop. We could see for miles across the rolling hills and it was there we would teach orienteering to eager young Scouts.
Each Scout was asked to spot a landmark across the horizon and take a compass reading, orient the map, plot a course, and lead the patrol to the selected landmark. Soon, with the landmark no longer visible, each Scout learned the journey's success was dependent on their patrol leader's orienteering skills. The slightest deviation off course over the distance traveled left the group far from the landmark originally selected.
Lessons learned from those orienteering sessions in the Flint Hills highlight the importance of understanding your purpose, the vision to see the possibilities, and clear direction to turn possibilities into reality. Those simple lessons also reflect my personal philosophy and approach to the practice of law.
